Menzel Memory dynamics in the honeybee
نویسنده
چکیده
Reward learning in honeybees initiates a sequence of events which leads to long-lasting memory passing through multiple phases of transient memories. The study of memory dynamics is performed at the behavioral (both natural foraging behavior and appetitive conditioning), neural circuit and molecular levels. The results of these combined eorts lead to a model which assumes ®ve kinds of sequential memories, each characterized by a set of behavioral and mechanistic properties. It is argued that these properties, although re ̄ecting general characteristics of step-wise memory formation, are adapted to the species-speci®c adaptations in natural behavior, here to foraging at scattered and unreliable food sources.

Randolf Menzel has been a professor of zoology and head of the Neurobiology Unit at the Freie Universität Berlin since 1976. His group studies sensory physiology — in particular, olfaction and vision — navigation, communication, learning and memory in the honeybee, with an emphasis on the underlying neural mechanisms. His aim is to relate different forms of memory to their respective neural str...

متن کاملProcaine impairs learning and memory consolidation in the honeybee.
In vertebrates local anaesthetics lead to various learning deficits, depending on the site and time of injection. In this study we show the effects of the local anaesthetic procaine on learning and memory in an invertebrate, the honeybee. Reversible blocking of neuronal processes leads to different memory deficits depending on the time window during which the local anaesthesia is in effect.

Learning, memory, and social behavior are innate properties of the honeybee that are essential for the survival of each individual as well as for the survival of the hive. The small, accessible brain of the honeybee and the availability of the complete sequence of its genome make this social insect an ideal model for studying the connection between learning, memory, and social behavior.
متن کاملTemporal dynamics and foraging behaviour in honeybees
Learning at the feeding site initiates various forms of memory which differ with respect to their temporal dynamics, contents and stability when exposed to successive experiences. Neurobiological analyses indicate that these different forms of memory reside in different parts of the brain: the non-associative memory in the antennal lobes, the associative memory in the mushroom bodies. Single-ce...
